Metal Fabrication

Description: This course provides an understanding of the scope and importance of welding in our society; welding safety, basic joints, positions, processes, welding procedures, electricity, and certification. An intro to SMAW (stick), GMAW (wire), and oxy-acet processes will be covered utilizing lecture and lab exercises. Prerequisite(s): None

Competencies

  1. Identify the clothing items that should be worn when welding or cutting.
  2. List at least seven hazards that exist in the welding shop.
  3. Identify several occupations is the welding industry and lis the recommended amount of education for each.
  4. Explain the effects of welding on metal.
  5. Identify basic weld joints.
  6. List the four welding positions.
  7. Identify the parts of a weld joint.
  8. Identify equipment used for welding and cutting.
  9. Perform SMAW welding.
  10. Set the proper amperage and polarity on a welding machine.
  11. Select electrodes to meet the requirements of various welds.
  12. Identify the characteristics of a good weld.
  13. List advantages and disadvantages of GMAW as compared to SMAW.
  14. Set the proper amperage, wire speed, and gas flow to perform proper welds with a GMAW.
  15. Perform GMAW welding.
  16. Describe the plasma arc cutting process.
  17. Identify safety considerations for plasma arc cutting.
  18. List the safety precautions and protective clothing used for oxyacetylene cutting and welding.
  19. Set an oxyfuel gas cutting machine to perform proper cuts in different materials.
  20. Perform cuts with an oxyfuel gas cutting machine.
  21. Perform oxyfuel gas welding.
  22. Discuss some of the requirements for different welder certifications.
