Foundations

Description: This course introduces the fundamentals of nursing care and the interactive role of the Nurse. Physiological topics covered include: sleep/rest, integumentary system, elimination, infection control, safety, health assessment across the life-span. Psychological topics covered include: therapeutic and professional interpersonal communication. Nursing Profession topics include: the nursing process, evidence-based practice (EBP), cultural competence, confidentiality, patient education, professionalism, scope of practice and nursing informatics. Prerequisite(s): Admission to the program Co-requisite(s):BIOL2221,2252, MATH1110/1930, PSYC2201

  1. Utilize effective interpersonal skills for interdisciplinary communication and the development of therapeutic relationships with a variety of clients.
  2. Identify nursing interventions that support adequate rest and sleep.
  3. Assess and manage elimination needs.
  4. Identify critical principles in the maintenance of infection control and safety.
  5. Demonstrate physical assessment of key body systems (integumentary, respiratory, cardiovascular, abdominal, and neurological) across the lifespan.
  6. Utilize the nursing process throughout all phases of assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention and evaluation.
  7. Develop sensitivity and the art of caring.
  8. Perform effective patient education in nursing practice.
  9. Develop an understanding of the ethical and legal issues regarding the professional role, scope of practice, and use of social media for nurses.
  10. Identify the principles of evidence based practice and its role in the profession of nursing.
