Future Learners

1. How do I apply for admission?

Submit the MnSCU Application for Admission on line or by mail.
Send the $20 non-refundable application fee with the application (provide a credit card number if registering on-line).
Request that an official high school transcript or copy of G.E.D. Diploma be sent to the Admission's office.
Request that an official college transcript(s) from all previous colleges attended be sent to Admission's office.
Submit dates of immunization (MMR & Td).
Complete college readiness assessment.
Submit health screening record if you are applying or Clinical Lab Tech, Child Care, Massage Therapy, or Nursing. [TOP]

2. Do I have to take the ACT or SAT test to be admitted?

No. However, the college does require that new students take a Basic Skills Assessment to assess the student's reading, writing, and math levels. [TOP]

3. Can the College Readiness Assessment be waived?

Students who have ACT scores of 24 or higher or transferable credit in math and communications from an accredited college may have the assessment waived. Contact the Admissions Office for more information. [TOP]

4. Will my credits from another college transfer?

Students must initiate the credit transfer process by contacting Debbie Grovum, counselor. Official college transcripts will be reviewed to determine what will transfer. [TOP]

5. Do I need a laptop computer?

Many programs require students to have laptops. Refer to the program listing on the website to find out if your program requires a laptop. [TOP]

6. Where can I live?

Learners can contract with Bemidji State University for dorm housing with meal plans or they can live in private housing. Private housing information is available in the Admissions Office. [TOP]

7. How long will it take to graduate?

The length of time to graduate depends upon the program major and the number of credits taken per semester. Certificate programs may take a few weeks while diploma or AAS degrees will take up to two years for full-time students. Many students attend college part-time, which extends their time until graduation. [TOP]

8. Will I be able to get a job after I graduate?

Over 95% of our graduates get jobs related to their majors. Graduates are assisted in their job search through Placement Services. [TOP]

1. What is my username and password for my computer?

Your username is the following format: FirstName_LastName (example: John_Smith)
Your password is your student ID number.

3. How do I access my e-mail?

Learner e-mail is located at http://netmail.ntcmn.edu.

4. How do I access my instructor's folder?

Windows: From the computer desktop screen - click on the Start button - click on Run - type in the Open box: \\moe\faculty - click on the OK button [TOP]

Your username is your FirstName_LastName. (example: John_Smith)

Financial Aid

1. How do I apply for financial aid?

First, you need to complete a Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). You can do this online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. NTC’s school code is 005759.
Second, complete an NTC financial aid application. Call 218.333.6649 and ask for a financial aid application to be mailed to you or click here to print it.

2. When do I find out if I get financial aid?

You will be sent an award letter as soon as it is processed. This typically takes 2-3 weeks after you’ve completed your application (i.e, after you have submitted all the requested documentation). [TOP]

3. Can I check the status of my application in the meantime?

Once you’ve been admitted to the college and been assigned a Learner ID number, you can check the status of your application online by clicking here.
If you don’t yet have a Learner ID number, you can check on your application by e-mailing the financial aid office. [TOP]

4. I received a notice that my financial aid application was selected for “verification.” What does that mean?

About 30% of all financial aid applications are selected for verification. This means that you must provide additional document to verify the information you included in your application. The notification will tell you what you need to provide, based on your situation. Typically you will be asked to provide income tax forms for yourself, plus forms your parents/guardians, if you are a dependent. Please respond to these requests right away as we cannot award you any financial aid until the requested documentation is received. [TOP]

1. Where do I get a Leaner ID card?

Come to the library and check with Ann to see when you can get one made. [TOP]

2. Where do I go to fill out a proctor form?

The Distance Education website, Current Students, Form, Proctor [TOP]

3. How can I check out materials from the library?

You need your learner ID card. If you do not have an ID card, arrange for one to be made at the library. [TOP]

4. Where can I make copies?

There is a copy machine in the library for 10 cents a copy. [TOP]

5. Where can I find research for class assignments?

The librarian can help you with research through online databases, inter-library loans, or reference materials in the library. [TOP]

Misc

1. Didn’t Northwest Technical College used to have more campuses?

Yes. Moorhead, Detroit Lakes, and Wadena merged with Fergus Falls.
Together, these 4 campuses are called Minnesota State Community and
Technical College (MSCTC).
East Grand Forks has merged with Thief River Falls and are now called
Northland Community and Technical College (NCTC). [TOP]

2. I need a copy of an official transcript from NTC. What do I do?

Mail a signed copy of the Transcript Request form along with $2.00 to NTC. [TOP]
