Diploma — High Performance Engine Machinist

This 49-credit diploma program offers an excellent career option for students who are interested in an automotive career but do not want to be an auto mechanic. Courses explore all aspects of engine rebuilding, and the program has expanded into high-performance engine rebuilding with the introduction of a new flowbench and engine balancer. In the past several years, new and updated equipment has been acquired so students are trained on the same equipment that they will find in industry. Hands-on lab experience combined with classroom theory on machining make this program an excellent choice for those interested in pursuing a career in high-performance engine rebuilding. Fewer than 10 High Performance Engine Machining programs exist nationwide, so placement potential is virtually unlimited.

Employment

High-Performance Engine Machining graduates are qualified to pursue careers as pit crew mechanics or engine machinists in a variety of motorsports such as dirt track racing, NASCAR, circle track, rally racing and other race circuits. Graduates also work as machinists in industrial tool and die shops, including those shops specializing in engine and part fabrication for automotive, agricultural and recreational vehicles. Next Steps

Nearly all of the credits earned through this diploma may be applied toward the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) High-Performance Engine Machinist degree.

College Readiness

A student may be required to enroll in college readiness courses in reading, writing and math. A student’s scores on the Accuplacer assessment will determine enrollment in college readiness courses. The purpose of college readiness courses is to prepare students for the demands of a college-level curriculum. Credits may vary.
