Assessment and Waivers

Assessment

All NTC learners must take the Accuplacer assessment or be eligible for a waiver. The assessment is not an entrance test.

Accuplacer assesses your college readiness skills in the areas of reading comprehension, sentence skills, and arithmetic. NTC believes your academic success requires skills in these three areas. If you do not meet the cut-off scores on any portion of the assessment, you will be required to take a college readiness class in the corresponding subject area. If you are enrolling in a business program, you will also take a three minute keyboarding assessment. This is for placement in the appropriate keyboarding class.

If you are enrolling in the Practical Nursing program, you will take a brief pre-science assessment. This is for placement in the appropriate Anatomy and Physiology class. There is no fee the first time you take the assessment.

Students may retest two times. It costs $10 for each retest. Please pay the $10 retesting fee in the bookstore and turn in the receipt to the test proctor at the time of the test. If you would like to prepare for the assessment, please visit:

If you've had an assessment test at another college, please contact that school to forward your test results to us. NTC only accepts the following test results:

  • Accuplacer
  • DTLS
  • Companion
  • Asset
  • Compass

Requesting a Waiver

NTC waives the college readiness assessment requirement if you have one of the following:

  1. Earned a college degree (bachelor's degree or higher).
  2. Scored at least 21 on the English, math, and reading portions of ACT. Assessment must have been completed within three years of the date of the submission for reading and writing and within two years for mathematics.
  3. Provide assessment results from another college. It must have been completed within three years of the date of the submission for reading and writing and within two years for mathematics. This time limit may be waived if you earned an associate's degree.
  4. Achieved a 3 or higher on appropriate Advanced Placement (AP) test or a 50 or higher on a College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) test administered by the College Board. AP or CLEP Writing exempts from Writing and Reading assessments; any AP or CLEP Math exempts from math assessment.
  5. Completed college readiness courses within three years (writing and reading) or two years (math) with a grade of at least "C", including courses taken at NTC. Applicability of the courses will be determined by the college's Admissions Office.
  6. Receive a waiver for individual parts (reading, writing, math) of the assessment. This may be granted for completion of appropriate college-level course work with a passing grade. Waivers are determined by a course review completed by the college's Admissions Office.

Note: You must provide official transcripts or reports.
