Writing Fundamentals

Credits: 3

Description: This course is designed to help you develop your writing skills through practice. You will use the writing process to create various types of written work that effectively communicate your ideas and meaning. The course includes constructing proper sentences using Standard English, developing and organizing paragraphs and essays, writing for various purposes, revising you work, revising your work and proofreading and editing for correct usage and mechanics. (Learners who would benefit from developing their writing skills must take this course prior to other communications courses). Prerequisite(s): None

This course should help you gain the following abilities and competencies.

Competencies

  1. Demonstrate prewriting portion of writing process to assist with writing purpose, topic selection, detail generation and probing for meaning.
  2. Demonstrate writing portion of writing process to organize and develop main points to accomplish writing purpose
  3. Demonstrate peer editing portion of the writing process
  4. Demonstrate revision portion of the writing process with muliple drafts
  5. Demonstrate proofreading/editing portion of writing process to produce writing free of subject/verb agreement, pronoun/antecedent, punctuation, verb tense and sentence errors.
  6. Demonstrate team writing; participate in group revision and evaluate group suggestions
  7. Demonstrate independent learning skills
  8. Avoid plagiarism by generating one's own work and citing sources correctly
  9. Demonstrate appropriate formatting
